Young children will remember information learned in a musical setting more strongly than in a setting without music. Why? Because music is repetitive and they hear the same sounds and words over and over again. Likewise, learning with music activates the brain’s auditory pathways and strengthens knowledge retention. According to a five-year study at the University of Southern California’s Brain and Creativity Institute, musical experiences “appears to accelerate brain development in young children, particularly in the areas of the brain responsible for processing sound, language development, speech perception and reading skills.”

Now, let’s have some fun! Use the ideas below to make the songs more engaging and help your kids remember the lyrics.
1. Sing Along with YouTube Video Lyrics
Many of the above video links include the lyrics along with the song in the YouTube videos. This way you can sing in Spanish along with the song. This is the perfect activity to reinforce word sounds for your pre and emergent reader. It also gets your child “reading” the song and making connections between written and spoken words.
2. Host a Dance Talent Show
Don’t be shy—get moving to the beat of the music. Some artists like Pica Pica have dances you can mimic. But don’t be afraid to create your own! Another fun activity is to have kids develop their own dance moves and then have a “performance” or “dance-off” to the song. It is fun to see their creativity with music and movement.
3. Play Music as Background Noise
Music can be played passively, as well. Play the music in the car or at home while kids are playing with legos or coloring. It helps activate the creative side of the brain even further and boosts short-term focus.
4. Listen and Draw
