Numbers in Spanish
Los números (numbers) are symbols that we use to count, measure, and label.
Learning how to count and the numbers in Spanish is essential. We use numbers every day. To indicate the time, a date, to buy things, to do math and science, and even to play!
One of the best ways to learn the numbers is by dividing them in groups. That’s why I divided this lesson into bite-sized sections.
Let’s begin learning the Spanish numbers for 1-10:
Numbers 1-10
The numbers 1 to 10 in Spanish are the most important ones to learn, as they’re the base for all the other number combinations.
English | Spanish |
one | uno |
two | dos |
three | tres |
four | cuatro |
five | cinco |
six | seis |
seven | siete |
eight | ocho |
nine | nueve |
ten | diez |
Numbers 11-19
Keep in mind that the first 15 numbers in Spanish have a unique name. From 16 and up, the names of most of the numbers are the combination of two words merged together.
English | Spanish |
eleven | once |
twelve | doce |
thirteen | trece |
fourteen | catorce |
fifteen | quince |
sixteen | dieciseis |
seventeen | diecisiete |
eighteen | dieciocho |
nineteen | diecinueve |
The numbers 16 to 19 have something in common, do you know what it is? Yes! All begin with dieci—the combination of the words “diez y” (ten and).
Numbers 20-29
The numbers in Spanish are the evolution of Latin words used centuries ago that slowly evolved to the words we use today, and el numero veinte (number twenty) is one of those.
- Twenty one is veinte y uno
- Twenty five is veinte y cinco
- Twenty eight is veinte y ocho
PRO TIP! To make it easier to say and write, the words “veinte y” are merged to create “veinti” and instead of using three words to name a number, just one is used.
Take a look at the following table to learn how write and read the numbers from 20-29:
English | Spanish |
twenty | veinte |
twenty one | veintiuno |
twenty two | veintidós |
twenty three | veintitrés |
twenty four | veinticuatro |
twenty five | veinticinco |
twenty six | veintiséis |
twenty seven | veintisiete |
twenty eight | veintiocho |
twenty nine | veintinueve |
Note that veintidós, veintitrés and ventiseís have an accent.
Numbers 10-100
We are learning a lot about how to say Spanish numbers for kids! Now, let’s learn the vocabulary for counting by tens in Spanish.
English | Spanish |
ten | diez |
twenty | veinte |
thirty | treinta |
fourty | cuarenta |
fifty | cincuenta |
sixty | sesenta |
seventy | setenta |
eighty | ochenta |

To write the name of the numbers after 30, you just have to keep this “formula” in mind:
Base number + any digit from 1 to 9
For example:
- Treinta y dos – 32
- Cincuenta y siete – 57
- Ochenta y nueve – 89
Numbers After 100
To form numbers after cien, we need to remember the word: ciento.
Ciento means “a hundred” and is the key word we need when counting in Spanish.
To remember the numbers after 100, you just need the next formula:
ciento + any number from 1-99
For example:
- Ciento uno – 101
- Ciento treinta – 130
- Ciento cincuenta y cinco – 155
- Ciento quince = 115
This is going to be easier and easier if you keep practicing.

Spanish for a Better Future
Spanish numbers for kids is a key part of gaining fluency in this language.
While children are young, they have an incredible ability to pronounce sounds that are foreign and unfamiliar. They’re also capable of understanding complex grammar rules. The earlier they begin, the easier it will be for them to learn—although any age is a great time to start!
Spanish is a primary subject that most students begin studying when in elementary school. When they reach high school, they’ll find that Spanish is available as both an Advanced Placement (AP) test, as well as an SAT II subject test. While it’s certainly possible to memorize the exam material and do well, it’s infinitely easier when they enter the course with a strong knowledge of the language. Learning to speak Spanish at an early age can make these courses less stressful, more enjoyable, and ultimately, more rewarding.
